
Marine Data wins Manufacturing and Technology Award
Marine Data Systems Ltd. has been presented with the best Manufacturing and Technology Award at the recent Best of Business Awards hosted by the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce.
The company was praised for maintaining its strong financial position and for investing in new products and product development.
Marine Data designs and manufactures innovative navigation equipment solutions for commercial and military markets worldwide. At its Newport based Technology Centre, the company undertakes Research and Development, Design, Manufacturing, Sales and Customer Support. It also has its own on-site environmental test facility.
The current team have over 100 years of skills and experience in electronics, software and mechanical design, system design, manufacturing and quality assurance.

Marine Data makes vital equipment including bearing compass repeaters and rudder angle systems for major naval ships, submarines and surface ships worldwide including Disney and P&O cruise ships. Its latest product, the heading comparator unit, one of which is fitted to the Navy’s research E-Craft in Alaska, which utilises the company’s first graphical user interface. In the past 12 months, the company has seen a substantial increase in sales with 90 per cent exported to overseas customers, including the Spanish Navy plus a new contract from the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance in Australia.
Marine Data has embarked upon a business development initiative with the appointment of a new Managing Director, Chris Compton. Chris takes over from Tim Ingram who moves to the role of CEO. Chris will drive the business forward, building on the success achieved to date, increasing sales by 25% along with market share. Plans are in place to relocate to larger premises in 2011 to allow for this expansion. This will result in the creation of new job opportunities for software and hardware engineers, apprentice/technicians, sales and support staff.
